Why did we start the working group Sustainability? If you read the below newspaper titles, you get the tendency to do nothing.

But that’s not what we want! Because lowering your energy consumption can only be good – also for your wallet. And improving your environment feels good too, right? On top of that, Eindhoven municipality will stimulate everyone to say goodbye to the gas network. So it’s better to be prepared!

That’s why we as SBG started the work group ‘Genderbeemd Durability’; on one hand because of the heat transition (everyone off of the gas network), on the other hand because of other sustainable goals (e.g. live in a nice neighbourhood). Regarding the heat transition, residents can join municipality meetings. Already in 3 other neighborhoods the municipality started to investigate how to get everyone off the gas network. Also there, residents started work groups like we do currently. They did research and wrote a plan. And in neighbourhoods with houses built in the 50s and 70s, the conclusion was that it’s impossible on the short term to get everyone off of the gas network. The foundation ‘Buurkracht’ helped with the research and process. For more information, check: www.stichtingbuurkracht.nl/samen-van-het-gas-zo-pakt-eindhoven-dat-aan. So we have to be ready to make plans for Genderbeemd when the municipality wants to start. We also have to stop unrealistic ideas, if needed.

We want to start investigating energy savings in our neighbourhood now already. The variety in houses is low; about 10 different types, mainly built around 1975. With the knowledge and contacts of 040energie.nl, we are able to develop a plan for every type of house, e.g. isolate together (attic, floor, walls).

Finally: Worldwide the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a well-known term. These goals exist out of 17 targets to make the world a better place in 2030. The SDGs are developed by the United Nations, but everyone can contribute. From a neighbourhood perspective, 3 of the SDGs make most sense to start working on: affordable and clean energy, good health and well-being, responsible consumption and production. As mentioned, we are aiming for the first one at the moment. The other 2 we want to pick up as well in the future.
